Making the most of summer days (and nights!)
There’s no better time to get outside and soak up vitamin D than summer days! While spending time in front of the TV watching the Summer Olympics may be enticing, summer outdoor activities are especially important for seniors, as studies have shown outdoor physical activity can help prevent certain health problems, including arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, decreased bone density and more. Not to mention greater exposure to greenness is associated with a 12% lower mortality rate. But what activities can seniors do outside to help manage their stress and increase their quality of life?
Gardening
The benefits of gardening for seniors are extensive. From building a stronger immune system and bone density to lowering the risk of dementia and increasing dexterity, learn the full extent of the benefits and how to get started in our recent blog.
Take a walk in nature
Natural environments are known to promote physical and mental health. Pair this with low-impact physical activities, like walking, yoga or biking, and you’ve got the perfect opportunity to increase balance and strength, improve respiratory health and lower the risk of depression.
Go for a swim
Speaking of low-impact physical activities, aquatic exercises, like water aerobics for seniors, are particularly beneficial for osteoarthritis. Water’s buoyancy helps reduce the impact on joints and intensity of perceived pain. Warm water can also relax muscles, relieve stress and reduce stiffness.
Bird watching
A recent study found a positive association between seeing or hearing birds and mental well-being. This is an appealing summer activity for seniors in assisted living, as it caters to individuals with all types of mobility. Bird songs can also be a reminiscence activity for those seniors with memory issues.
Stargazing
For those looking to escape the heat of summer days, stargazing is a great alternative to get seniors active during summer nights. It’s also an activity that can stimulate seniors’ brains, improving their memory and critical thinking.
Take your hobby outdoors!
Summer weather opens up the opportunity for seniors to take their favorite hobbies, like reading, painting or crafting, outside! More time outdoors is proven to make individuals feel less depressed and anxious. Sunshine increases the blood flow to your brain, triggering the release of serotonin – the happiness hormone. So, spending time in the sun while doing your favorite activity = A boost for your brain!
If you plan on spending extended periods outdoors this summer, make sure to seek shade, wear sun-protective clothing, wear sunscreen whenever possible and drink plenty of water. These practices are proven to minimize short and long-term damage to the skin from the sun’s rays.
